Care & Polishing

Our knockers are solid cast brass with a hand-applied antique patina finish — no plating, no alloy fill. Solid brass rewards a little regular care, and there’s no single “right” way to keep it: some owners prefer to let the patina deepen naturally, others like to polish back to bright brass. Either is fine; here’s how to do both safely.

Routine cleaning

A soft, dry or lightly damp cloth wiped over the knocker every few weeks is enough for routine upkeep. For a bit more shine, a mild soap-and-water solution works well — wipe it on, then dry the piece thoroughly straight away, since brass left wet can spot or tarnish faster.

Preserving the antique patina

If you like the aged, antique look, avoid metal polish and abrasive cleaners entirely — they’ll strip the patina back to bright brass. Dry dusting and the occasional soap-and-water wipe (as above) will keep it clean without disturbing the finish.

Polishing to bright brass

If you’d rather bring out a brighter shine, use a proper brass polish (following that product’s own instructions) with a soft cloth, working in small circular motions, then buff dry with a separate clean cloth. Avoid steel wool, scouring pads, or household abrasive cleaners — they’ll scratch the surface.

Weather exposure

Since these are exterior door fittings, some tarnishing over time from rain, humidity, and coastal or monsoon air is normal for solid brass and not a defect. Wiping the knocker dry after heavy rain and giving it a clean every so often will slow this down considerably.

Mounting screws

Check that the mounting screws are snug every few months, especially after the first few weeks of daily use, and re-tighten gently if needed — door hardware naturally works a little loose over time with regular use.
